I am using this pre-workout supplement by XeroLimits called EPOBLAST. Now, let me tell you, after being a strong believer on using a pre-workout supplements containing nitric oxide and caffeine. This one puts the icing on the cake. I have used numerous nitric oxide/caffeine combo formulas, i.e: Super- pump 250 by Gaspari Nutrition and No-Explode by BSN. This one is definitely the “mother load of potency!!!! They even state it on their label: “THE MOST POTENT AND CONCENTRATED PRE-WORKOUT FORMULA THAT TAKES MUSCLE PUMPS AND WORKOUT INTENSITY TO A NEW LEVEL.” They also state that EPOBLAST is formulated for advanced athletes and bodybuilders who are willing to push themselves to a new level of training intensity and performance. EPOBLAST features five of the most powerful performance enhancing compound in one breakthrough formula!! 1) Psychotropic Energizers: Taurine, Glucoronolactone, Caffeine Anhydrous, Beta PEA, 5-HTP, Acetyl Tyrosine, Vinpocetine, Yohimbine HCI, and Ginko. 2) EPO Blood building technology: Arachidonic Acid, Nattokinase, Echinacea Purpurea Extract, Portulaca Oleracea Extract. 3) Multi-pump nitric oxide stimulating blend: L-Arginine, Arginine Ethyl Ester, AAKG, Cnidium Monnier, Pycnogenol, NAD, Citrulline, Malate. 4) Muscle endurance beta-alanine pH buffering system: Beta Alanine, Beta Alanine Ester, Sodium, Potassium, Histidine, Magnesium, Leucine, Isoleucine and Valine. 5) Muscle fiber volumizing Matrix: Creatine Ethyl Ester, Dicreatine Malate, Creatine Monohydrate, Creatine G;uconate, Glycerol Monosterate and GuaniPro.

I have been using this product ( it comes in a container with 20 convenient single serve stick packs) for three weeks now, and I must say each workout gets better than the previous one….one quick note about this product: As it states on the label, this product is extremely POWERFUL. I don’t advise to take it after 4 or 5pm, otherwise you will be up all night!!!!

One more note on my lifts while using this product:

Flat Bench Press: 315 for 10 Reps ( haven’t done this in a while)

Leg Press Machine: 1500 for 15 reps

Shoulder Press Machine: 4(45’s) on each side for 8-10

I am about to try other XeroLimit products on top of the EPOBLAST. For more information, check out their website: http://www.getxl.com, the site speaks for itself!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Had my first serving of the new and improved “Size On” tonight as I trained Shoulders. I tried the older version before and didn’t really care for the “chalky” after taste. This one however has no “chalky” taste. It actually tastes pretty damn good!! As I sipped it throughout my workout, I noticed a difference in strength, focus, and was able to train harder. I was able to do dumbbell shoulder presses with 120’s for 6 (haven’t done 120’s in a year or so). Overall I liked the results from my first try. Maybe it’s too early to speculate about its effectiveness, but I will keep you posted as the days go by! According to Gaspari Nutrition, the New Size On will “accelerate Protein synthesis & muscle force recovery, increase muscle volume, muscle fiber size, cell volume & plasma amino acid levels……” Gaspari came out with two versions of the New Size On. One is a “Pre-Contest” formula with low or no carbs, and the other is “the ultimate mass monster”, it has 39 grams of carbs. “The Ultimate mass monster” Size On is the one I am taking!!! For more information on Gaspari’s products check out his website: http://www.Gasparinutrition.com

I recently purchased a bucket of Lana’s Egg Whites to add to my supplement arsenal. I was a little skeptical of the product at first, since I was going to used it in lieu of milk or water in order to mix my protein powder to add extra protein to my shakes (a 12oz protein shake mixed in water yields about 45gr of protein, now with two cups of egg whites I get a whopping 92gr.) I had heard great positive feed back from many Lana’s customers, so I decided to give it a shot! I have been using it for about 2 weeks now, and I have noticed a tremendous change in my workouts with the added protein in my diet. It is hard at times to get in about 5 to 6 normal meals a day. I usually drink three protein shakes a day. Each shake has about 92gr of protein, times that by three, and with just three simple 12oz shakes, I take in about 276gr of protein on shakes alone!!! In terms of customer service you couldn’t ask for a better service!!!! Lana personally email me to let me know the order had been processed, and was on its way. She also told me which I didn’t know at the time, her company is out of Danville, CA, right next door to me!! Next time I order some more egg white buckets I wont have to pay for shipping!!! In terms of taste, I can’t even taste the difference!!! It has an awesome taste when I mix it with my strawberry flavor whey protein. Lana’s Egg Whites is the perfect meal before you go to bed since egg protein is a slow digesting protein! For more info check out her website- http://www.lanaseggwhites.com

WHAT IS N.O EXPLODE NT?

According to BSN’s website, they describe this supplement, as the following:

“N.O EXPLODE NT is the next evolution of BSN’s #1 selling extreme pre-training energy and performance igniter. Athletes from all fields of competition will experience unprecedented levels of energy and motivation as well as mental focus to excel at the highest levels. This cutting-edge formula works to relax blood vessels and improve blood flow by promoting nitric oxide production, thereby increasing oxygen and nutrient delivery to muscle tissue, which results in increased muscle work capacity and efficiency as well as decreased fatigue and soreness. Muscle power and strength are greatly enhanced, while the fullness and density of muscles are also markedly improved.”

Function: Ultra extreme pre training Igniter

Size/Count: 30 packs

I took my first dosage today, 30-45 minutes before training quads. Although I am trying to get rid of a cold that has been lingering around for the past week, I had a pretty intense workout and mental focus. Perhaps it is too soon to say, but I will keep you posted on my future training days using this product.

Food for thought…..one thing I dont miss about these types of supplements is the fact that it keeps me up late at night. I took only one serving at around 4pm….and has I post this, it is 1 in the morning. To make things worse I also took 2 -tylenol PM’s 2 hours ago and it had no affect on me whatsoever!! I feel like if I could stay up all night if I had to….

This past weekend I had the pleasure of working out at the Powerhouse Gym in downtown Santa Rosa. This gym, if you don’t already know used to be 5Th Street Fitness Gym, where I had the opportunity of training in the past. Every-time I am in the area of Santa Rosa I try to make my way to this gym. As it turned out, this past weekend as I was coming back from Mendocino County, I made a point of training shoulders, arms, and calves there. This time I also met up with the owner/operator and ex bodybuilding competitor Catt Tripoli. Mrs Tripolli, was able to take a few minutes of her busy schedule as a personal trainer to talk to me and show me the “new” equipment they had in the gym. Apparently, the gym that was operating across the street from them went out of business, and they had the chance to get some of their machines. She showed me the old school vertical leg press that they recently acquired. This machine, if most of you are not aware of ; is the same machine where good ol’ Tom Platz built his “beast-like” quads. In the end I had a great workout like I always do every-time I train there. This gym has a great atmosphere, pleasant people, who actually go out of their way to know your name. It has a great layout as well. All upper body is on the floor level, all lower body and cardio is on the upper level. The third level has a circuit training room, along with a chiropractor’s office for all your back adjustment needs. The only thing that would put the icing in the cake for this gym would be to build a “fire house” restaurant across the street, just like down in Venice, California.

Recently, I haven’t really been that motivated to train hard, nor have I had any sort of any short term goals in terms of competing anytime soon. It has been a while since I have stepped on stage and competed. I always wanted to do either Musclemania or Team Universe. After watching this year’s Team Universe, I noticed competition was pretty intense. If and when I compete again, I would be in the light heavy division (197.) I have come to the realization that I am not getting any younger, so I have decided to “attempt” to prep myself to be back on stage and compete in the 2011 Team Universe. I figured a year and half give or take is plenty of time to gain some pretty good amount of muscle, bring up some of my lagging areas, and to come in the best condition I can possibly be in. I will be chronicling my journey in terms of training and dieting. Stay tuned!!

I have been using this training style for about 2 months now, and I love it. The following article was taken from elitefitness.com, and it goes into detail explaining how this training system works.
What is FST-7?
FST-7 is a training system Hany Rambod devised after years of research and a great deal of trial and error with many clients. FST stands for Fascia Stretch Training, and the seven refers to the seven sets performed for the final exercise of a target bodypart. Hanny has many clients that use this system for overall growth and especially to improve stubborn bodyparts that were seemingly resistant to just about anything else the person had tried. FST-7 encompasses several factors both inside and outside the gym.
Is fascia limiting your muscle growth?
There are three types of fascia in the human body, but the type bodybuilders

should be concerned about is deep fascia. This is dense fibrous connective tissue that interpenetrates and surrounds the muscles, bones, nerves, and blood vessels of the body. The high density of collagen fibers is what gives the deep fascia its strength and integrity. The amount of elastin fibers determines how much extensibility and resiliency it will have. In other words, some of us have fascia that is thicker and tougher than others. The most genetically blessed bodybuilders have thinner fascia, which is why their muscle bellies appear to be larger and fuller, with that round ‘bubbly’ look that all bodybuilders covet. Ronnie Coleman and Phil Heath would be two prime examples of individuals blessed with thin fascia. Their muscles expand easier. Think of it in terms of it being easier to blow up a balloon as opposed to one of those water bottles that strongmen like Franco Columbu used to. Jay Cutler and Nasser El-Sonbatty are two men that clearly have thicker fascia. This didn’t prevent them from building substantial muscle mass, obviously, but neither man ever had that round ‘Marvel Comics’ appearance to their muscles. Yet the average bodybuilder has thicker fascia than either of those two champions. In an effort to expand their fascia and allow growth to occur, some have turned to Synthol and other items that are injected deep into the muscle belly. There have even been some advisors, mainly online, that make it seem as if this is the only solution and must be done. They will also try and insist that all the pro’s use Synthol and site inject, which I can assure you is not true. Synthol and related products are foreign substances, and you can never be certain how they will metabolize in the body. We are starting to see various health issues with bodybuilders that are more than likely related to site injecting. Yes, you do need to stretch the muscle fascia to experience optimal growth, but that is not the way to do it.

All stretching is not the same
Hanny is not the first person to recognize the importance of stretching the muscle fascia. First John Parrillo, then more recently Dante Trudel of DC Training fame, incorporate aggressive stretching during workouts as part of their training programs. They had the right idea, but stretching the fascia by elongating the muscle is not the best method. FST-7 is based on stretching the muscle from the inside out by volumizing it. This is accomplished by getting the greatest pump possible while training.

Do I still train heavy, or can I just pump up with light weights?
One thing he doesn’t want anyone misconstruing is that FST-7 is all about pumping. That’s just one component. He believes that a bigger muscle is a stronger muscle, and you absolutely must train with heavier weights in the 8-12 rep range. He has tried many variations of heavier and lighter training with clients over the years, and discovered that both types are needed. Heavy weights will build thickness and density, but they will not give you that round, full look. Similarly, getting incredible pumps all the time can impart some of that roundness, but you won’t ever get extreme muscle size without training with heavy straight sets. So you need to focus equally on maximizing both your strength and your pump in the same workouts to see optimal results. Here’s an example of a biceps workout, FST-7 style, that shows you how to incorporate both:

Alternate dumbbell curls 3-4 x 8-12
Machine preacher curl 3 x 8-12
EZ-bar curl 7 x 8-12 (rest 30-45 seconds between sets while sipping water – more on this next month)

He states that he doesn’t typically like to use very high reps, because too often you will experience general fatigue and get short of breath before you have built the maximum pump in the muscle. I also don’t like the weight to be too heavy and limit the reps any lower than eight, because this is when you see form breaking down and ancillary muscles kicking in and robbing the target muscle of the proper stimulation. You can think of the ‘7’ set as blowing up a balloon. We keep the rest periods fairly short, because as you pump up the muscle, a little blood escapes in that time. You can think of it as blowing up a balloon with a slight leak in it – even though the balloon is being inflated, some air is escaping. The key is to build on the pump sets by set, exponentially, so that it reaches its maximum state by the final set. If the rest periods were too short, you wouldn’t have enough energy to do justice to the seven sets. Another question I often get is, should the weight be constant as the seven sets go on? It can be, but it’s perfectly fine to reduce the weight one or two times as needed to stay in the proper rep range. There may also be times when you need to increase the weight, but this happens less often.

How often can I train bodyparts this way?
Generally speaking, this type of training is too traumatic on the larger muscle groups to use more than once a week. Due to the sheer volume of muscle cells, soreness tends to linger too long to allow for more frequent workouts. For instance, Phil Heath recently completed a back workout and was sore for four days. Since he is supposed to be training back and chest twice a week in preparation for the Arnold Classic, this threw him off his schedule somewhat. The higher than normal amount of microscopic tears in the muscle caused by FST-7 training necessitates a bit more recovery time than standard training protocols. However, smaller bodyparts like arms and calves certainly can and should be trained twice a week. This gives you twice as many opportunities to stretch the fascia in what are often exceedingly stubborn bodyparts. Here’s a sample split that displays how you could arrange this:

Day one: Biceps and triceps, calves
Day two: Legs
Day three: OFF
Day four: Chest and triceps
Day five: Back and calves
Day six: Shoulders and biceps
Day seven: OFF

This is a split geared toward someone with the goal of improving stubborn arms. There are many other variations depending on what the individual’s goals might be.

Which exercises are best suited to the ‘7’ sets?
Certain exercises are more appropriate than others for the ‘7’ sets. The big compound free weight movements like squats and deadlifts usually are poor choices, for two reasons. For one thing, they involve several other muscle groups and don’t do a good job of isolating a target muscle. Also, they require technique and balancing, which tends to break down if one attempts to perform multiple sets in such a short time span. Machines are a good choice in many instances because they keep you in a fixed plane of movement and thus make it easier to isolate a given muscle. Those with selectorized stacks also make it very fast and convenient to increase or decrease the resistance as needed. Here are some suggested movements that I have found work very well:

Back width: Machine pullovers (Hammer Strength, Nautilus) or cable pullovers

Back thickness: Seated row machines with chest support

Chest: Pec deck or peck flye machine*, cable crossovers
*I find that the pec decks with the pads for the elbows usually work very well for shorter trainers, while the pec flye machines
with handles seem to be better for tall guys. Try both – you will know by the pump and range of motion you achieve which one is a better choice for you.

Shoulders: Machine lateral raises with pads – my favorite is made by Bodymasters. Hammer Strength, LifeFitness, and Cybex also produce similar models.

Quads: Leg extensions, leg presses

Hamstrings: Seated or lying leg curls

Biceps: EZ-bar curls, machine curls, cable ‘front double biceps curls’

Triceps: Cable pushdowns using rope attachment
Overhead cable extensions
Skull crushers (for advanced trainers)

Calves: Standing and seated raises, calf raises using leg press
(alternate between these three)

When should I do my ‘7’?
The best time to do your ‘7’ is as the final exercise for a muscle group. You don’t want to do it first, as this would take away from your performance on the heavy straight sets that are also a critical factor in building muscle mass. Finishing off a bodypart with a great pump is something many top bodybuilders have been doing instinctively for years, not knowing that they were expanding their fascia and maximizing growth. It may be tempting to do your pumping sets earlier on if you can’t seem to get any kind of pump going, but I would urge you instead to do something like a set or two of 21’s to get the blood flowing and then proceed with your heavy sets before capping it all off with your ‘7’ set for that bodypart. Remember, ‘7’s’ are done at the conclusion of each bodypart, so if you are working multiple bodyparts in a given workout, you will be doing two or more of these extended pumping sets.

Let me first tell you that this gym used to be Gold’s gym, so in terms of equipment, they have pretty much everything you can imagine. Great machines for arms, legs and chest. I was pretty impressed with the variety of squat racks and different leg exercise apparatus. In terms of the arms section, they have a pretty cool bicep machine that empasizes the peak of your bicep. That particular day, I trained pretty much every body part, and I had a pretty good pump!!! Out of 10, I would give it a 7 (I would score it higher if it wasn’t for the distance.)

Let just say that I was pretty disappointed with this gym. I worked out a few times in this gym when it used to be “Mavericks”, and I thought they would have made some drastic changes and improvements. I was wrong!! This place is pretty claustrophobic, and everytime I was walking from room to room it seemed I would bump into some sort of equipment. Speaking of equipment, the only machines I liked was one for chest (cybex) and the shoulder press machine. They do have a pretty cool squat machine, it reminds me of the Frank Zane squat machine, but overall I was disappointed of this gym. Out of 10, I would give it a 2!!
