Chief Gary Boyles has been forced into early retirement from the Rodeo-Hercules Fire District, but will continue to be paid for the next two years (a total of $162,180). Boyles’ removal was brought on by firefighters union Local 1230. Battalion Chief Alan Biagi will serve as interim Chief.

Apparently at the heart of why Boyles was disliked by some was his desire to perform the “pack test” instead of just CPAT certification on firefighters in the district who would be called on to serve on wildfire strike teams. Serving on these strikes teams ads up to lots of extra money in overtime for firefighters.

The good news for me is that I will be moving on to the written testing part of the application process (yay me!).
